I don’t know if it’s a first for such a position but Pope Benedict has named Tel Aviv-born Jewish-convert Franciscan Father David Maria Jaeger as the latest member of the Roman Rota, the Holy See’s highest appellate court.

Tomer Zarchin offers a sympathetic profile of Father Jaeger in today’s Haaretz.

Father Jaeger is also credited with being the principal drafter and lead negotiator both of the 1993 Fundamental Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel, and the 1997 “Legal Personality Agreement.”

He summarised the state of play in Vatican-Israel relations in this interview last year with Zenit.
