Blame it on his Bible reading or on the bishops, but it looks like world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is getting soft.
“It’s not right that I share God’s word and at the same time hurt other people,” he’s been quoted as saying.
“I’ve gained more than enough blessings these past years, so I think it’s time for me to return the favor,” he added.
The first man in the history of boxing to win eight separate weight divisions has also announced that he’s decided to stop living a life of vice and he’s doing away with his collection of 1,000 fighting roosters.
Some Philippine bishops recently said the boxer’s popularity qualifies him to become “Bible ambassador” to promote the Gospel.
But the usually vocal Archbishop-emeritus Oscar Cruz has not added his voice to the welcoming chorus. The Philippines is not lacking in people to preach the word of God, he says, and popularity is not the sole qualification for spreading the teachings of the Bible.
Might be best not to let Manny hear that, just in case he fancies one last scrap.
Here’s a clip of Manny when he wasn’t quite so worried about hurting people.
